What is EDNOS?
EDNOS stands for “Eating disorder not otherwise specified”. It is a type of eating disorder that does not present with enough signs and symptoms for it to be classified as either anorexia nervosa or bulimia. For experts in this field of medicine, EDNOS belongs to a middle group of patients who either have similar symptoms with either anorexia or bulimia. This middle group though may feature a large case of patients that cannot be otherwise classified with a specific eating disorder.
EDNOS is considered to be the most common type of eating disorder. This is due to the fact that numerous patients with eating disorders typically present complicated and/or similar symptoms to the standard classifications of anorexia and bulimia. As for the experts, people that are diagnosed with EDNOS may either belong to about three subgroups. The first group are those that have sub-threshold symptoms of both anorexia and bulimia. The second group typically have mixed symptoms of both these eating disorders. The third and final subgroup meanwhile is labelled as the atypical group since the people with this condition have symptoms that are not connected to the standard eating disorder category.
Various criteria must be met in order for a case to be classified as EDNOS. When it comes to menstrual cycles for female patients, one may be diagnosed with EDNOS if the periods occur at regular intervals. This is a direct opposite to anorexia nervosa wherein the menstrual cycle is typically absent. Another criterion for EDNOS diagnosis is that the person’s weight must remain normal. There are a lot of other items to consider before a doctor can determine whether a person has EDNOS or not. The most important thing to know is that being diagnosed with EDNOS does not mean that the condition is mild enough to not seek medical attention. Experts on this subject always point to the fact that all people with eating disorders must seek medical attention early in order to get a better prognosis and this is regardless of what type of disorder one is diagnosed of.
