What is Ditropan used for?
Ditropan is a prescription drug specifically used for those with problems in the urinary bladder. It is prescribed to treat or decrease symptoms of bladder over-activity, like frequent urination and incontinence.

Ditropan has the generic name of oxybutynin chloride. It is the main drug used in the management and treatment of neurogenic bladder. In neurogenic bladders, patients may feel sudden urges of urination even at night. Some may also experience pain on urination, while others experience some “urine-leaking” or urinary incontinence in medical terms. Ditropan acts to suppress these symptoms by reducing or stopping the over-activity of the urinary bladder. The desire or urge to urinate will then be delayed by relaxation of the bladders muscles with decrease in muscle spasms through the action of ditropan.

Problems in the bladder usually come as a result of abnormal muscle contractions. These are often frequent and beyond the control of the patient. This will then result to frequent trips to the bathroom as patients feel that their bladder is full all the time. Ditropan is prescribed specifically to decrease the frequent and abnormal muscle contractions in the bladder to ease the symptoms.

But the use of ditropan must always be coordinated with doctors. A prescription is required for this drug and children under 5 years must not take this drug at all. Ditropan is also contraindicated and/or regulated for those with sensitivity to oxybutynin, angle closure glaucoma, ulcerative colitis, myasthenia gravis, liver and kidney disease, prostate enlargement, and gastroesophageal reflux disease. It is also advised that pregnant women should consult with their doctors first before taking this drug.

As with other drugs, ditropan may cause some side effects. One such side effect is drowsiness. Great care must be taken when one is driving or is required to be alert like operating a machine for example. Other side effects of this drug include constipation, nausea, decreased sweating, diarrhea, loss of appetite, heartburn, and loss of appetite among others. Usually these symptoms are mild, but if patients feel anxiety or experience serious side effects, immediate consultation with doctors is advised.
