What is Civilization?
Civilization is considered a vague term. The term covers various interconnected cultural trends of humanity. Agriculture is a part of civilization where people have different means or ways in cultivating the land and domesticating animals. Construction of cities is also part of civilization. Therefore, civilization may be something that pertains to how humans find ways to improve their way of life.

From the early times, where people are nomadic and roam around to find food for survival, up to this point in time, where people live in cities and stay in a place they can call home, it can be called civilization. Improved way of life is civilization.

It can be traced back from about 12 to 10 thousand years ago. It was when the Pleistocene era was about to end. It was the beginning of Holocene, the time when Wisconsin glaciation began to melt. It was the time when the temperature of the Earth becomes more conducive for living things. It was when people start to stay in one place, cultivate the land, and domesticate the animals.

Humans also learned to select the plants to cultivate, and it was the start of planting modern cereals for consumption. Oats, barley and lentils are some of the earliest modern cereals being cultivated by the early civilization. Cultivated modern cereals are said to contain more calories and more palatable.

The Middle East, Egypt and the Fertile Crescent in Iraq exhibit the first human civilizations. These locations show evidence of earliest modernity of human life. It is Jericho, which was considered the first city and it can be found in Jordan Rift Valley in West Bank. There are various evidences found in the city that show early form of living.

The city was found to have traces of potteries, which means pottery industry has long been in existence. There are also granaries, permanent settlements, domestication of animals as well as social systems. It was evident that early humans have already had their own form of social organization.

People have learned to stop being nomads and lived in stationary settlements. This permits people to build their social structures. Possessions of lands and homes were already established just like what modern people are experiences right up this present time. All of these evidences are all part of human civilization.

On the other hand, experts who study civilization explain how Fertile Crescent developed the first civilization. They say there are reasons why the first civilization and agriculture grew in this Fertile Crescent. Geographical disparity made the area a viable location for plant cultivation. Early people experimented on ways and planting techniques to produce crops for consumption. It has led the people to learn about the many plant species that are good for cultivation.

Moreover, the weather in the area was quite predictable. There is a long dry season and rainy season where people learned to know when the good time to plant is and harvest crops. The planting and harvesting of crops made the people stay and abandon their nomadic life for good. As time goes by, people learned to domesticate animals and everything develops into a more civilized way of life.
