What is BTEC?
BTEC stands for Business and Technology Education Council. It is a British organization formed in 1984 that provides various qualifications for a wide range of vocational courses. Courses that are part of this program are called “BTECs”.

BTECs or BTEC courses are popular because of the “hands-on” experience in the learning system. Courses may range from Engineering, Information Technology, Travel, Tourism, Health Care, Social Care, Performing Arts, Retail, and Child Studies among others. Schools have different qualifications in taking up BTEC courses. Qualification also depends on the type of course that a student plans to take. Assessments are usually based on coursework, skills demonstration, and case studies. Instead of the traditional written exam, students are usually asked to demonstrate particular skills to merit a certificate. The other good thing about BTEC courses is that study time is flexible, because one can enroll full-time or part-time in a period of 1 to 2 years. This is especially advantageous to working students that need to juggle time for work and school. Most schools offer BTEC programs to those who are aged 16, while some offer programs to those who are only 14 years of age.

Those who earned GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) certificates may also proceed to take up BTEC courses. Normally, students take up BTEC after regular school days, because GCSE courses have to be studied continuously or full-time. So, BTEC is the best option for those who want to spread their schooling over a couple of years. In this way, skills will be acquired gradually. Another good thing is that each BTEC course is composed of a particular number of units. Each person is required to demonstrate skills to achieve one unit. Projects involved may also be finished individually instead of the traditional group submission. In this way, students will be able to hone their own skills for possible job placements.
