What is BJP?

BJP stands for Bharatiya Janata Party, the second largest political party in India. This political party was established back in 1980 and stands as one of only two major political parties in India. Throughout its existence, the BJP has been known to be supporters of Indian Nationalism. Traditionally, the Bharatiya Janata Party also pushed for conservatism in terms of social policies, free market concepts and capitalism, and a foreign policy based on nationalist agenda.

The formation of BJP followed that of another party called BJS or Bharatiya Jana Sangh which was founded as early as 1951. Some 30 years later, the BJS became BJP and continued its thrust on national issues like self-reliance, social welfare, and the creation of a strong national defense system. Inside the BJP organization, the president has the highest form of authority but can only have a term of three years. After the president, this political party is composed of many vice presidents, secretaries, and party treasurers. On the state level, a similar organizational structure exists with the party president serving a three-year term. The BJP associates itself with other groups and organizations that involve in activities to promote the protectionism concept in terms of the national economy. These affiliate organizations include Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Swadeshi Jagaran Manch among many others.

Integral Humanism has been the core of the BJP ever since it was established about three decades ago. And aside from its advocacies on stronger national defense and small government, the party is also associated with free market and capitalistic policies to create for a robust business environment and economy but with special regard for social welfare. In the heart of integral humanism involves satisfying the citizens with what they really need instead of what they want. Catering to all the wants is considered a form or materialism which is advocated by “Western” political philosophies. This is what the BJP tries to avoid and instead focus on creating a harmonious society.
