What is a domain?

Domains refer to the online or network addresses of various servers.  When a particular server or network wants to go online and become part of the internet, it must secure its own domain with a corresponding name according to the DNS or Domain Name System. This naming system basically creates a label or description for each domain server that is available over the internet.  Part of the domain assignment is the complete website or network address.  The addresses available for registration may be chosen from a standard list of domain names which can be applied for based on category or network services offered.  Aside from the website address, domains that are internet-based also contain various data including file folders or directories and email addresses.  All these will become part of one domain and may be accessed only through the domain name or the server’s website or online address.  Under normal circumstances, network servers already have IP or Internet Protocol numbers which serve as description.  For easy recall by non-technical users, the use of domains and the Domain Name System was created for online and/or internet purposes.

Domains over the internet follow certain standards and rules based on DNS.  Top-level domain name examples include “.com”, “.edu”, and “.org”.  For network servers that cater to various businesses and enterprises, they may register to get “.com” as the suffix of their domain as in “newbusiness.com”.  In this particular example, “newbusiness” is the actual domain and this can be customized based on preferences or services offered.  The suffix “.com” is also added to complete the online address of the new domain.  In the case of schools the top-level .”edu” domain may be used for registration. The “.org” top level domain suffix may be used for various organizations like non-profit groups for example.  After registration of the domain, the corresponding web address will then be configured to translate to the actual IP address of the server.  In this way, online users will have an easier time accessing information from various domains that may be located or based in different parts of the world.
